Panoramic China – The Miracle of Shenzhen

Panoramic China – The miracle of Shenzhen is a multi-artform live installation combining different Chinese traditional performing art forms with a full size video backdrop. Partial of the live performance will sync up with the video projected on the backdrop screen. By using different mediums and linking up with digital technology, the show will present a multi- dimensional performance.

All music will be newly composed with various styles including traditional Chinese, East meets West and contemporary. A central computer will link up with background sound and keep in sync with the video. Musicians, dancers and acrobats will perform live with the visual images.

By using visual, audio and live performance, Panoramic China explores the changes of modern China in the past 30 years and presents an unique opportunity for audiences of all age to experience what China is about.

It is an opportunity for the audience to experience the colours and diversity which include of 55 different minority groups in China through a visual and audio performance.

Led by UK based Chinese Composer Jiang Li, the Panoramic China – The Miracle of Shenzhen will focus on Shenzhen city as it is a mirror of China in the past 30 years or so. Born in Shenzhen, Jiang was the first musician in performed in the first foreign hotel in Shenzhen city, he experienced the changes of Shenzhen in the past 30 years. For this project, Jiang will collaborate with artists from Shenzhen and the Chinese artists in this country to present a unique production of photo exhibition, educational workshop, and the evening multi-artform performance.

About Shenzhen:

1. First city in China to open up to the world in late 70’s as a experiment known as Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. The success of Shenzhen led to the change of China in the past 30 years.

2. Population from around 30,000 in late 70s to more than 12 million in 2005. Average age is less then 30.

3. Taken one third of the foreign investment for China.

Imagine a city being built from scratch. Imagine a marshy coastal strip filled with paddy fields and fishing villages transformed into a megalopolis within a few short years. Shenzhen is just that miracle place.

Funded by the Arts Council of England, the first part of Panoramic China is a research, to gather creative ideas and collect raw materials for the creation of a cross platform live performance, also audience development for the performance.

The second part of the project will be the creation and rehearsal of the performance in East Midlands region.
